I know beaurocracy complicated everything it touches, but let me give you a little insight into why I'm mere inches away from setting the dump they call "Student Housing" on fire and dancing around it chanting.
I'm in a double, which means I have a roomate. No problem there. Each of us pay $1,468 per semester to live there. since we effectively live there for 4 months at a time, thats about $367 a month. Here is what we get for that shiny penny: a small dorm room, with a bathroom that has a broken faucet, missing tiles, and an utterly grotesque shower; age old lighting that is too dim for a study environent; a doorknob that doesn't work right, i.e. it doesn't deadbolt; and for the grand finale, carpet from the 1980's that looks like its survived a lavaflow.
Can someone please tell me where all this money we're paying goes? Oh wait, nevermind, I'll tell you where it goes. It goes to the 11 heirarchies of housing administration. 11. For less than 100 employees, 11 bosses. One position of administration is titled "Dorm Coordinator". What the hell does this person do? Wake up each day and make sure the dorms are still there? You don't need someone to coordinate the goddamn dorms because the hall managers of each dorm do that themselves! So back to the question of where all this money I have to squeeze out of my broke ass is going, it's paying some administrator's salary. It's not going to fixing or rennovating the dorm, or to adding on and making student life more pleasant, where it -should- be going. How about replacing that rancid carpet?
Need more? When I was preparing to leave for "Winter Break", I observed something that nearly caused me to have a nosebleed; the maintenance staff was replacing every single EXIT sign in the building with new, flat, green plexiglass ones. If you don't see what's wrong with this picture yet, let me continue... The exit signs that were there before worked perfectly. They were bright, easily visible at day or night, and served thier purpose with no problem at all. And here they are, replacing them with new, fancier ones. CAN I PLEASE GET SOMEONE TO YELL "WHAT THE FUCK" WITH ME? The exit signs? Why would they replace the exit signs, the one part of the goddamn dorm that -didn't- need to be replaced? Whoever thought up this idea needs to be beat into submission by an angry mod then molested by several apes.
But that's not all. My previously mentioned roomate wanted to move out and get a single room so he could have a better study environment. Fine, totally understandable. However, there is a freeze on housing into 10 days into the semester and no one on campus can move out. He's signed up for a different room, he just can't move into it... However, seeing as how -I- now have a double room with an opening, housing can stick anyone who's enrolling this semester in the room with me... and al my stuff... and all my roommate's stuff. There is nothing to stop them from doing that, they don't know the difference. So I get the feeling I'll be fighting with housing when I go back, for long enough to get fed up, write them all off, boycott them, and move into a legitamet place of residency.
